The launching of work on a new airport terminal at Rajamahendravaram popular as Rajahmundry at a cost of Rs 350 crore will help promote tourism and trade in a big way in the Godavari delta area.

The upgraded airport will have several sustainable features like thermal insulation, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting to align with five star GRIHA rating. The airport will have 17,029 square meter with as many as 28 check-in counters on arrival, three aerobridges and a variety of F&B and retail outlets. There is a demand from locals to increase the frequency of domestic flights and upgrade the airport further to introduce international flights.

“The new terminal building at Rajahmundry airport is being constructed at a cost of Rs 350 crore shall prove to be a boon for the Godavari region. At 400 times the existing building and serving 10 times the number of passengers up to 30 lakh per year, it is nothing short of a marvel,” said V Vijayasai Reddy, YSRCP parliamentary party leader in a tweet posted on X.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotirditya Scindia laid the foundation stone for the terminal. Once completed, the airport, which now has three flights to Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru can handle 2100 passengers during peak hours and three lakh per annum.

In his speech, Scindia said the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen on strengthening existing airports and building new airports to make India an important aviation market. He said they wanted to increase the number of airports to 200 by 2030. The number of airports in Andhra Pradesh has gone up from four in 2014 to six now with the construction in progress for two greenfield airports at Bhogapuram and Nellore. Number of flights operated in the State, which was 388 in 2014, has now gone up to 388.
